Insight.

What is the world coming to if everything we do must be done in excess? I’ve started to notice that slowly all trends go from having a few of these or doing a little bit of these and then all of the sudden it turns into, we have to have all of this and do this ALL the time. From shoes to drugs, our country is slowly turning into a world of overindulgence.
It starts with the kids who abuse drugs to a point of killing their minds or even worse themselves. Why did they even start up to begin with? I know they consider addiction a disease now, but I really wonder if it really is a disease of if it is another one of our excuses. Having an older brother who has been in and out of rehab and jail since I was 12(he was 16) I have little sympathy for those who can do something so stupid and completely rip a family apart and still sit there and do the same thing. It completely baffles me. The doctors insist that it is his addiction doing this, but I just don’t buy it. Especailly now a days where doctors have basically made up a diagnosis for everything from boredom in class (or what they like to call ADD) to depression because people just aren't ALWAYS happy.
Drug addiction most often happens to the people who cannot deal with real life. They use drugs because they cannot handle real emotions, whatever they might be. They use and abuse until there is nothing left. They rip threw every relationship, family and friends, until they get what they need, but then there is no stopping it. It is a circle that never ends. I understand that life sucks sometimes, but seriously deal with it like everyone else by shopping, exercising, or screaming and crying, just stop with the stupid stuff that can kill you.

A question here is how much the addicted person is responsible for his own addiction. Is it a physical problem as the doctors say, or is it a personal weakness and failure to accept that life means dealing with problems? Should we have sympathy or should we blame the person? The rising tide of drug abuse among the young makes me think that Schumaker is right that our culture could be causing the problem by encouraging self indulgence rather than self-discipline, and making us think that happiness is some kind of instant gratification. He tlaks aobut the John Updike story about the people who "had sold their happiness to trinkets and death." This is America, where we take everyithing in" To find happiness, gulp something.

I guess I would kind of be biased as I talk about this because of everything that has happened in my family, but I think the addicted person is fully responsible for their own addiction. It all starts as a personal weakness and an escape from reality and then becomes a physical problem(or at least that is what the doctors say...) I know I shouldn't but I blame the person, he had caused so much pain and worry in my famiy and will not have the courage and self-control to stop and I know if he truly wanted to stop he would. It is such a huge problem in our society right now and it is just sad because it is almost like a whole part of my generation is killing themselves off. I'll write more later once I can think of something!!!

I think that this is one of your stronger posts. It deals with an issue our country is currently struggling with and you make several strong points. Some things are okay if they are done in moderation..but no one seems to go by this rule anymore. Of course I wouldn't apply this to drugs, which I don't believe are possible to do in small doses without getting addicted
